The offside rule in soccer is a fundamental regulation designed to maintain fair play and prevent goal-hanging, where a player remains near the opponent’s goal awaiting a pass. According to this rule, a player is in an offside position if they are nearer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent (usually the last outfield player) at the moment the ball is played to them by a teammate. 

 

However, being in an offside position is not an offense in itself. It becomes an infraction only if the player actively participates in the play by attempting to play the ball, interfering with an opponent, or gaining an advantage from being in that position. This rule encourages strategic play, requiring players to carefully time their runs and passes in behind the defence.

 

Simply put, a player is offside if they are closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent when the ball is played to them, except during a goal kick, corner kick, or throw-in. This rule prevents players from simply waiting near the opponent’s goal, encouraging strategic play and team coordination. The below image showcases the red attacker (right of screen) beyond the second-last blue defender (where the offside line is drawn), leaving him in an offside position. Whereas, all of his teammates in red are in an on-side position because they are not past the second-last blue defender.

Now for some real game examples! Below is an EPL match with Tottenham Hotspur (white) as the attacking team. As we can see, the Tottenham attacker is beyond the imaginary line of the second-last defender (1st defender is the goalkeeper). He is in an offside position because of his leg and shoulder (which you can score a goal with).

 

 

One final example is from the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The attacking player’s (white) shoulder and head are beyond the second-last defender’s deepest position, his boot, meaning he is in an offside position. If the attacker timed his run correctly and he was on the other side of the defender, he would be deemed as onside.
