Super Bowl LVIII Preview – 49ers vs Chiefs Prediction & Tips

 

In the USA, the 2024 Super Bowl – known as Super Bowl LVIII or Super Bowl 58 – will be taking place at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Sunday February 11 2024 at 6:30pm USA Eastern time.

 

Due to the time difference with the USA, the Super Bowl 2024 will be broadcast in Australia on Monday February 12 2024.

 

Australian NFL fans can watch a live broadcast of Super Bowl LVIII on TV via Channel 7 and ESPN.

The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowls with six apiece.

 

The San Francisco 49ers could join them with six Vince Lombardi trophies if they can beat the Chiefs in Super Bowl 58. Currently the 49ers and Dallas Cowboys are equal with five each.

 

The Super Bowl 2024 sees the San Francisco 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs, who are designated as the home side.

 

For the Chiefs, it will be their fourth Super Bowl in the last five years as coach Andy Reid and star man Patrick Mahomes look to become the first back-to-back NFL champions in 19 seasons.

 

The 49ers for their part are looking for their first Vince Lombardi trophy since 1994.

 

They were defeated in the 2013 and 2020 Super Bowls – the latter by the Chiefs – and have lost the NFC Championship game in the last two seasons before going one better this year.

 

The Kansas City Chiefs were underdogs heading into their Super Bowl 2023 clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

 

They also had to win the Super Bowl the hard way, coming from 10 points down at half-time to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in a Super Bowl classic.

 

The San Francisco 49ers are the favourites with the bookies after finishing the regular season as the NFC’s top seed with a 12–5 record.

 

However, when it’s come to the post-season, that’s when things have taken something of a turn. During the playoffs, the 49ers have endured nervy wins over the Green Bay Packers (24–21) and Detroit Lions (34–31).

 

In both those matches, the 49ers have had to deliver big comeback wins, with the NFC Championship game seeing them down 24-7 at half-time before they produced a huge second half against Detroit.

 

 

He may have been the last picked in the 2022 NFL Draft but quarterback Brock Purdy has been just what 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan needed, although whether the 24-year-old can stand up to the pressure of the decider remains to be seen.

 

The Chiefs, on the other hand, weren’t nearly as impressive as San Francisco during the regular NFL season.

 

They did open their title defence with a 6-0 record, but from then on, the last 10 games of the season were split 5-5.

 

However, like the champion New England Patriot sides of the last few years, the Chiefs have known when to bunker down and deliver, with Kansas City stepping up during playoffs and reeling off three professional victories in a row.

 

These wins have come against the Miami Dolphins (26-7), Buffalo Bills (27-24) and Baltimore Ravens (17-10).

 

Throughout it all, there’s been the figure of Taylor Swift in the background as the international superstar has supported her partner, Chiefs champion tight end Travis Kelce, from the stands.

 

Indeed, Swift is making a rapid fire dash from Japan where she is touring as part of her Eras Tour, to Las Vegas for the Super Bowl this year.

 

 

San Francisco 49ers @ Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Match Centre

Monday 12 February, Allegiant Stadium, 10:30am (AEDT)

 

This one promises to be another classic after NFL fans were spoiled with last year’s brilliant clash between the Chiefs and Eagles.

 

The 49ers head in as favourites for this game and a win here would see them join the Steelers and Patriots with six Super Bowl victories. However, their post-season form has been somewhat scratchy and they come up against a Chiefs outfit that may be underdogs but know how to rise to the occassion.

 

Alongside Purdy, the 49ers boast some serious attacking weapons in Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. Overall, the San Francisco offense has averaged 28.9 points this season to be third best in the league delivering an average of 257.9 yards per game in the air (4th best in NFL), 140.5 on the ground (3rd best) and an average of 28.9 points an outing (3rd best).

 

McCaffrey has been seriously good for coach Shanahan, having at least four receptions in each of his last five games and scoring a touchdown in his last six playoff games. The 27-year-old has rushed 98 and 90 yards respectively in his last two games, so looking for him to do this again may be a bet worth throwing in.

 

However, McCaffrey and Purdy and their mates are coming up against a serious opponent in the form of the Chiefs’ defense.

 

The Chiefs’ defense is rated the best in the NFL after giving up just 17.3 points on average per game during the regular season. During the playoffs, that’s shrunk to 13.7 points conceded in three games. However, that figure has plenty to do with conceding just six points against the Dolphins in their first playoff game. When it came to the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Divisional Playoff, the Chiefs gave up 24 points so they’re not completely invulnerable. That being said, they’re pretty nasty against the pass and deliver varied pressure and coverage, so the 49ers offense may be up against it.

 

While Kansas City probably boast the best defense on the park, their attacking weapons are not limited either.

 

Starting with two-time Super Bowl MVP in quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs boast plenty of attacking talent too in the likes of Travis Kelce and Isiah Pacheco.

 

The Chiefs lost the chance to go back-to-back in 2021 when Tampa Bay proved too good in a 31-9 result at the Raymond James Stadum. However, they returned fire by digging deep to win the Super Bowl last season and have the chance to do it all over again in 2024.

 

When the Chiefs defeated the 49ers in 2020, it was coach Andy Reid that delivered the vital plays at the right time against his opposite number Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers were actually winning that contest by 10 points before San Francisco’s Jimmy Garoppolo missed some throws that would have helped them build on that advantage. In the end, the Chiefs made them pay, coming from behind to win that contest.

 

Although the roster has changed since then, that result will still smart for the Californian side and they will be desperate to take the Chiefs down in Las Vegas as they lok to cap several seasons of fantastic form with a Super Bowl title.

 

However, the 49ers are coming up against a team that’s looking to establish itself as an NFL dynasty in the same mould as the New England Patriots. The 49ers may have the attacking weapons, but Kansas City have the defense to do the job.

 

They also have a quarterback in Mahomes who has delivered on the big stage before. Purdy has been fantastic and his skill set can’t be underestimated, but he’ll have a tough night against this defense.

 

Prediction: Kansas City to win Super Bowl 58 @ $2.10 (Sportsbet)

The story goes that Chiefs’ founder Lamar Hunt – who also formed the then-AFL (American Football League) – was negotiating a new-look Championship game.

They are a world-renowned spectacle and, this year Usher will take the stage at approximately 12:30pm AEDT.

Down: A period of action that starts when the ball is put into play and ends when the ball is ruled dead (meaning that the play is completed). The offense gets four downs to advance the ball 10 yards. If they fail to do so, the team must surrender the ball to the opponent, usually by punting on the fourth down.

 

End zone: A 10-yard-long area at both ends of the field — the promised land for a football player. You score a touchdown when you enter the end zone in control of the football. If you’re tackled in your own end zone while in possession of the football, the other team gets a safety.

 

Extra point: A kick, worth one point, that’s typically attempted after every touchdown (it’s also known as the point after touchdown). The ball is placed on either the 2-yard line (NFL) and generally is kicked from inside the 10-yard line after being snapped to the holder. It must sail between the uprights and above the crossbar of the goalpost to be considered legit.

 

Field goal: A kick, worth three points, that can be attempted from anywhere on the field but usually is attempted within 40 yards of the goalpost. Like an extra point, a kick must sail above the crossbar and between the uprights of the goalpost to be ruled good.

 

Fumble: The act of losing possession of the ball while running with it or being tackled. Members of the offense and defense can recover a fumble. If the defense recovers the fumble, the fumble is called a turnover.

 

Hash marks: The lines on the centre of the field that signify 1 yard on the field. Before every play, the ball is spotted between the hash marks or on the hash marks, depending on where the ball carrier was tackled on the preceding play.

 

Interception: A pass that’s caught by a defensive player, ending the offense’s possession of the ball.
